Energy-Efficient HVAC Solution Enhances Comfort and IAQ
- DC Elementary School realizes 73% reduction in outside air requirements.
- Commercial Real Estate, Educational Facilities
Overview
For over four decades, Broadcasters’ Child Development Center (BCDC) in Washington, DC, has been committed to providing a safe, healthy learning environment for children. When they decided to expand their space, BCDC faced a critical HVAC challenge: how could they deliver excellent indoor air quality (IAQ) in a tight footprint without costly system overhauls?
Havtech partnered with the engineering team at Little Diversified Architectural Consulting to identify a solution that would protect young students and teachers while reducing long-term operating costs.
Challenge
BCDC’s building expansion required more conditioned air, but the facility had no room for larger ductwork and limited access to outside air. A traditional Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) was not an option. The center needed a system that would:
- Improve IAQ for children and staff
- Fit within existing space limitations
- Avoid major capital upgrades
- Deliver long-term energy efficiency
Solution
Havtech recommended an enVerid HLR (HVAC Load Reduction®) module, designed to scrub air of CO₂, VOCs, and other contaminants. The HLR technology reduced the outside air ventilation required, maintained the existing duct size, and delivered superior indoor air quality that otherwise would not have been possible.
By introducing this innovative solution, Havtech helped the project team:
- Eliminate the need for larger ductwork
- Reuse the existing system footprint
- Deliver superior IAQ with fewer outside air requirements
Conclusion
By pairing enVerid’s innovative HLR technology with Havtech’s local expertise, BCDC overcame space and air supply constraints to create a healthier environment for children and staff. The project proves that even in tight spaces, energy efficiency and outstanding IAQ can go hand in hand.
